Creativity

“The essence of creativity is making new connections.”
National Advisory Committee on Creative and Cultural Education (1999)

Below are three disparate entities. What connection can you create between them?

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a Science or an English teacher, whether you consider yourself ‘logical’ or ‘artistic’, systematic or intuitive, everyone is creative.

So what does this have to do with your classroom?

Creativity is a buzz word in education not only because it makes learning more fun, but also because it’s of practical use. For example, how many inventions relied on at least an element of creativity, of someone looking for a new connection, a new approach to solving a problem? So creativity, as a tool and as an outcome, is of as much use in Science, Maths or Geography as it is in English, Art or Dance. Staff might even be creative in finding ways of teaching these subjects together – how might this be done?

Whatever approach is taken, creativity should form a significant element in any learning environment. And in such an environment, where expectations are high and everyone is encouraged to take a chance, watch the students’ imaginations grow. No longer will you be seen as having all the answers; you’ll have an opinion like everyone else.

Imagine: classes of creative, independent thinkers who share ideas and opinions, and are as happy to work with each other as by themselves.
